Pilot Awards
Since 2017, The ITM has been funding Pilot Awards that offer researchers more money, new resources, and
collaboration opportunities with stakeholders ranging from industry to community members. Learn more to see

(K) AWARDS
The ITM administers the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Career Development (K12) Awards, including the Paul
Calabresi and Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) K12 Award programs. This funding opportunity is open to
all ITM institutions, including researchers at UChicago, Rush, Loyola University Chicago, Endeavor Health, and the Illinois
Institute of Technology. Since the programs began, the ITM has awarded more than $7.5 million to more than 40 junior
investigators at multiple ITM institutions, and many alumni have gone on to secure major grants and scale their projects to
improve people’s health.
INSPIRING CHANGE AWARDS
The Inspiring Change Research Training Program is made of up three parts – training for community members,
training for researchers, and funding for teams sparked from both trainings. Many health research projects
study specific communities, but they often don’t have a team member from that community involved in the
study design from day one.
TL1 Trainee Awards
The TL1 Postdoctoral Program is a National Research Service Award (NRSA) funded training program
comprising participating degree programs at the University of Chicago, Rush University, and Loyola University
Chicago. The program will prepare postdoctoral trainees with clinical (MD, DNP, PharmD, DMD/DDS, etc.) or
research degrees (PhD) with the skills to conduct independent and collaborative research that will transform
the science and practice of medicine, and improve clinical practice and health outcomes. The TL1 is
administered by the ITM in partnership with the Center for Health and the Social Sciences at the University of
Chicago. Trainees can be based at any ITM institution.
SHORT-TERM PILOT AWARDS
Short-Term Pilot Awards are for post-doctoral clinician-scientists in training at ITM institutes, such as residents,
fellows and other trainees whose mentors do not have financial support for the specific projects the applicants
are trying to undertake. The ITM has awarded more than $117,000 in Short-Term Pilot Awards since 2007 to
more than 18 post-doctoral clinician-scientists.
Core Subsidy Awards
Need help designing your study? To store tissue samples? A high-powered microscope for your research?
No need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars you don’t have on equipment, infrastructure, and
humanpower. The University of Chicago Core Facilities offer you a centralized location for specialized
equipment – plus the experienced staff to make the magic happen at a fraction of the cost of doing it yourself.
This award is open to investigators at the University of Chicago.
